'Cats Fall to NKU, Set for Miami (OH)

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — After scoring a run in the top of the first inning, Northwestern was not able to manufacture much more offensively and fell to Northern Kentucky, 7-1, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
Northwestern (5-15) collected hits from Jack Dunn, Jack Claeys and Ben Dickey in the contest. Claeys drove in the Wildcats' only run after he doubled home Matt Hopfner with two away in the top of the first.
Northern Kentucky (7-13) was led by Trey Ganns, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Kyle Colletta and Anthony Vagnier both tallied a pair of knocks for the Norse. Nick Beard (2-0) earned the victory after entering in the fifth inning and tossing 5.0-scoreless innings.
Cooper Wetherbee (0-2) looked good early for the Wildcats, but a three-run inning from the Norse in the bottom of the fifth forced head coach Spencer Allen to go to the bullpen.
Josh Davis, a junior transfer, tossed 3.2 innings, striking out three batters and only allowing three hits.
Northwestern will head back to the Buckeye State tomorrow to play its fifth game in as many days when it squares off against Miami (OH) at 5 p.m. CT. The game against the Redhawks will be Northwestern's final non-conference game before opening Big Ten play on Friday against Ohio State.
