Northwestern's Late Rally Comes Up Short

3/23/2016 8:55:00 PM | Baseball

OXFORD, Ohio — Northwestern attempted to mount a ninth-inning rally at Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday evening, but came up just short falling to the Redhawks, 5-4.

Northwestern (5-16) entered the game's final inning trailing by a pair of runs. Zach Jones, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, doubled to begin the final frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jake Schieber walked in the next at-bat to put runners on the corners.

Connor Lind brought in Jones from third on an RBI-ground out two batters later to make it a one-run game, 5-4, and move the game-tying run into scoring position at second base. However, Willie Bourbon went down swinging in the next at-bat to make the contest final.

Richard Fordon, who started on the mound for the second time this season, went 2.0 innings and struck out a pair, but the lefty would receive a no-decision. Pete Hofman (0-2) took the loss for Northwestern after he allowed the Redhawks to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Northwestern pitched the game by committee and ending up using seven arms in the outing.

Michael Hendricks (3-1) earned the victory for Miami (OH).

With the #B1GCats trailing by a run, 2-1, in the top of the fifth inning, Schieber took a pitch deep over the left-center fence to even the contest and collect the first home run of his career. He finished the game with two RBIs.

It was a good day at the plate for Northwestern's freshmen. Center fielder Ben Dickey went 2-for-4 in the game, while classmates Jack Dunn and Jake Garbarino each tallied doubles and runs scored.

Garbarino's start behind the dish at catcher was the first start of his career.

Northwestern will take the day off tomorrow and travel to Columbus, Ohio, to get ready to open Big Ten play on Friday, March 25, at Ohio State's Bill Davis Stadium.
