Northwestern Match Notes


EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern returns home Friday night to take on the 17th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers at 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
 
The first 100 students in attendance will receive a coupon for FREE Blaze Pizza, and the winner of musical chairs at intermission will have the opportunity to throw a pizza party for 10 at the restaurant.

The Wildcats travel downstate to take on No. 13 Illinois Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. 

The Minnesota match on Friday will be livestreamed on BTN Plus and live scoring for both matches will be available via TrackWrestling. Links can be found at the top of the page.

IN THE POLLS
Jason Tsirtsis is ranked third at 149 lbs. by FloWrestling and fourth by The Open Mat, the NWCA Coaches Poll and InterMat this week.
Dominick Malone moved into the national polls for the first team this season at 133 lbs after a 3-2 win over No. 17 Rossi Bruno of Michigan last weekend. He is ranked No. 20 by InterMat. Jameson Oster also found his way into the polls for the first time at 141 lbs. He is No. 20 in his weight class according to FloWrestling.
• Northwestern is ranked No. 23 by InterMat in the tournament rankings, the third time in the last four weeks they have been in that poll.
 
FRESH FACES
• Nine of the ten indivdual bouts between Northwestern and Minnesota will be a first-time matchup. Only Jason Tsirtsis and Jake Short have met before at 149 lbs. Tsirtsis holds a 2-0 advantage over Short with a 2-0 win at the 2013 Midlands and a 5-3 win last season in a dual at Minnesota.
 
A PINNING MACHINE
Dominick Malone has been a pinning machine so far this season, winning eight of his 17 matches by fall. He has outscored his opponents in back points, 66-8.
• All of Malone's falls have come in the first period. His fastest was a 45 second pin of teammate Ian Cramer at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 15. He has two other pins in less than a minute - a 56 second win over Scott Stevens of Franklin & Marshall in the Wildcats 30-18 win at the Grapple at the Garden and a 58 second fall at the Midlands of CSU Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera.
• Malone leads the team with 17 wins. He won eight in a row from Nov. 15 to Dec. 13 and has won seven of his last 10. Five of his six losses are to ranked opponents.
 
TSIRTSIS WINS...A LOT
• With a 78-9 career record and now in his third season, Jason Tsirtsis ranks second on Northwestern's career winning percentage list with a mark of .897. He finished the 2014-15 season with 39 wins, good for seventh on the single-season wins list at Northwestern. Jake Herbert is the most dominant wrestler in program history with a career record of 135-4 for a winning percentage of .971.
