The Wildcats will welcome all five of their WCWS squads home during series against Nebraska
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 2016 season marks the 10th anniversary of Northwestern's 2006 run to the championship game of the Women's College World Series, and the Wildcats are hosting a reunion weekend for all five of its WCWS teams April 15-17 at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
Northwestern will welcome back its teams from 1984, 1985, 1986, 2006 and 2007 to celebrate the rich tradition of #B1GCats softball during a three-game series against Nebraska. Team members will be honored throughout the weekend, beginning with the opening game at 4 p.m. Friday, April 15.
Saturday, April 16, will feature an 11 a.m. tailgate ahead of the scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch. Fans are encouraged to come early and enjoy a pregame party with the icons of Northwestern softball! The returning team members then will be honored during a pre-game ceremony on the field.
The series concludes at noon Sunday, April 17.
Season passes to Northwestern are ON SALE NOW! For the first time ever, fans can support the Wildcats by becoming a season pass holder. Passes are good for all 13 Northwestern home games this year; the price for adults is $49 while youth passes are $29.
Northwestern made its first appearance in the Women's College World Series in 1984 on the arm of All-American Lisa Ishikawa and the offense of NFCA All-Region performers Krista Dempsey, Lisa Koser, Sue Koopman and Karen Lemke. Northwestern advanced all the way to the semifinals and finished third in the country that season.
The Wildcats would return again in 1985 and 1986, placing fifth and seventh, respectively. Ishikawa repeated as an All-American in 1985, then joined Dempsey, Meg Haller and Martha Oyog with All-Region awards for the 1986 campaign.
Following that dominating stretch in the mid 1980s, Northwestern returned to the Women's College World Series in back-to-back seasons from 2006-07. The storied 2006 team led by seniors Kristen Amegin, Ashley Crane, Jamie Dotson, Courtnay Foster and Sheila McCorkle played one of the most exciting games in program history to open the 2006 series when freshman Erin Dyer hit a two-strike, two-out, bottom-of-the-seventh home run to tie Alabama before the Wildcats went on to win in the 10th.
Staff ace Eileen Canney along with sluggers Garland Cooper and Tammy Williams then led Northwestern past Tennessee and UCLA to reach the championship final for the first time, where NU eventually fell to Arizona.
In 2007, seniors Canney, Cooper, Katie Logan and Jessica Miller led the #B1GCats back to Oklahoma City and past Arizona State and Baylor to reach the semifinals for the third time in program history and the second year in a row.
Northwestern will be celebrating these teams and the 2006 season in particular all year long at NUsports.com and on social media (@NUSBCats on Twitter, Northwestern Softball on Facebook and nusbcats on Instagram).
Single-game tickets for Northwestern softball will go on sale March 1.
