Three-Run Fifth Inning Propels Wildcats to Victory

2/26/2016 11:56:00 AM | Baseball

STOCKTON, Calif. — A three-run fifth inning propelled Northwestern to a 3-1 victory over Pacific on Friday night in the series opener at Klein Family Field.

Northwestern (3-2) leaned on superb pitching to help limit Pacific (0-5) to four hits in the contest. Senior Reed Mason got the nod from head coach Spencer Allen for the start and proceeded to pitch 5.0 innings, only giving up one run on three hits and striking out three batters to pick up his first victory of the season.

Sophomore Tommy Bordignon came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning and pitched 4.0 scoreless innings, surrendering one hit and striking out one to earn his first save of the season.

Bordignon has only given up one hit in 8.1-scoreless innings pitched this season.

Will Lydon earned his second loss of the season in seven innings of work and gave up six hits to the Wildcats.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, freshman Ben Dickey hit a triple to right field to bring home Jack Dunn for the first run of the game. Dunn scored after getting on base from a single earlier in the inning.

Freshman Willie Bourbon singled in the next at bat to score Dickey, before senior Zach Jones launched his second double of the season into the right-center gap to bring home Bourbon and give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers would score their lone run in in the bottom half of the inning on a fielder's choice ground ball to Dunn at shortstop.

Bourbon was the lone Wildcat with multiple hits, while Jack Claeys went 1-for-4 at the plate to improve his season hit total to six.

Northwestern and Pacific will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 4 p.m. CT with the nightcap slated for 8 p.m. CT.
