Northwestern Falls to Pacific, 7-3

2/27/2016 7:16:00 PM | Baseball

STOCKTON, Calif. — A Joe Hoscheit home run in the first inning gave Northwestern an early lead, but the Wildcats could not hang on as they would go on to fall to Pacific, 7-3, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

With the loss, Northwestern falls to 3-3 on the season, while Pacific claimed its first win of the 2016 campaign to improve to 1-5.

Hoscheit's blast was his second of the season and sixth of his career. The St. Carles, Ill., native went 3-for-5 in the game with a double to add to his home run.

Junior Josh Davis (0-2) started on the bump for the Wildcats and went 5.0 innings, surrendering seven hits and five runs. Ricky Reynoso was the winning pitcher of record for the Tigers.

Northwestern's lead would not last long. Pacific pulled even in the bottom half of the first on sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless second inning, Pacific tallied four runs in the bottom of the third to take its first lead of the game, 5-1.

The Wildcats got two runs back in the top of the sixth when Willie Bourbon brought home Matt Hopfner on a sacrifice fly and a Grant Peikert RBI single to left field scored Jack Claeys, who had singled earlier in the frame.

With its lead cut to 5-3, Pacific answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the sixth to extend its advantage over the Wildcats to 7-3.

Freshman Danny Katz pitched 3.0 innings of relief, giving up two runs and three hits, but striking out a career-high four batters.

Claeys and freshman Jack Dunn each racked up two hits in the contest.

Northwestern left 13 runners on base.

First pitch of the nightcap is set for 8 p.m. CT.
