EVANSTON, Ill. -- The road doesn't get any easier for the 26th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team. After playing each of their first five matches of the season against teams all ranked in the top 30 in the nation, the Wildcats travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Sunday to face No. 17 Alabama.
NU (1-4) is looking to snap a four-match losing streak, though each of the four defeats have come to foes ranked No. 21 in the nation or better. The Wildcats are coming off a tough 4-3 loss at home on Sunday to defending national champion and fifth-ranked Vanderbilt. Northwestern won the doubles point in that match and got singles victories from sophomores Alex Chatt and Erin Larner. The match camed down to the final singles contest on the courts with the Commodores picking up a three-set win at No. 5.
Northwestern and Alabama (2-3) are very familiar with one another have squared off just over a month ago at the Wildcat Duals at Combe Tennis Center in Evanston. Though the match was not a true dual match, the Wildcats won all three of the doubles matches contested as well as five of the six singles matches.
NU's lineup features two ranked doubles teams as Chatt and Maddie Lipp are No. 9 in the nation while Larner and Alicia Barnett are No. 35. The Crimson Tide has one ranked doubles duo in the 52nd-ranked team of Andie Daniell and Erin Routliffe. In singles action, Lipp is ranked No. 51 for Northwestern while Alabama has two ranked individuals in Daniell (No. 47) and Joanna Nena Savva (No. 122).
Sunday's matchup is the last one for the Wildcats before opening their Big Ten season at home at Illinois on Friday, Feb. 26.
