Chatt and Larner Notch Wins But 'Cats Fall to Crimson Tide

Northwestern opens Big Ten season at Illinois on Friday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- No. 26 Northwestern got singles wins from sophomores Alex Chatt and Erin Larner but the Wildcats suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 17 Alabama Sunday afternoon at Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
The match was the second of the season for NU that was played outdoors, joining a Feb. 7 match at UCLA.
The 'Cats started the day by suffering a tough loss in doubles play. Alabama won two of the matches -- at Nos. 1 and 3 -- in a tiebreaker, 7-6. The 35th-ranked team of Larner and Alicia Barnett were the first victors in doubles at the No. 2 spot as they defeated Danielle Spielmann and Aryn Greene, 6-4. Needing a victory in just one of the two tight matches remaining, the Wildcats were unfortunately unable to get either. The Crimson Tide notched a 7-6 (1) victory before the night-ranked duo of Chatt and Maddie Lipp were narrowly upset by the 52nd-ranked team of Andie Daniell and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (5).
Things started well in singles play for Northwestern as Larner had no trouble with 122nd-ranked Joanna Nena Savva at No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-2 to even the match 1-1. When Chatt finished off her straight-sets victory over Natalia Maynetto at No. 4 -- 6-2, 6-4 -- the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the match.
A matchup of a pair of ranked players at No. 1 went the way of the Crimson Tide as 47th-ranked Daniell defeated 51st-ranked Lipp 7-5, 6-3 to tie the match, 2-2.
Northwestern had an opportunity to take the match as all three remaining matches on the courts went to a third set, but the Wildcats dropped all three of them as Alabama got wins from Erin Routliffe (No. 2), Spielmann (No. 5) and Greene (No. 6).
The 'Cats return to action Friday when they open up their Big Ten season by traveling to Urbana to take on Illinois.
