MESA, Ariz. — After giving up a run in the first inning, Northwestern baseball scored five unanswered in route to a 5-1 victory over Nevada in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Sloan Park.
Northwestern (2-0) topped the Wolf Pack (0-2) in the season opener earlier in the day and earned head coach Spencer Allen his first victory as head coach of the Wildcats.
"I am just really proud of the guys," said Allen. "We had a lot of guys make their debut in the purple today, including myself. We weren't perfect, but we did a good job of minimizing any mistakes we did make. I am just really proud of this group."
Junior Matt Hopfner was the sparkplug for the Wildcats in game two of the doubleheader, finishing the game 3-for-4 from the plate and was a home run shy of the cycle. Senior Antonio Freschet was 2-for-4 in the contest with a pair of runs batted in.
Senior Reed Mason got the start for the Wildcats, but was taken out after 1 1/3 innings. Mason surrendered a run on a solo shot to right field by Nevada's Trenton Brooks in the first inning.
Northwestern didn't waste anytime in getting the lead back. In the bottom of the first, both Joe Hoscheit and Hopfner singled to set up Freschet, who ripped a ball up the middle to score both Hoscheit and Hopfner giving the Wildcats their first lead, 2-1.
With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Tommy Bordignon struck out back-to-back hitters to get out of the jam in the second inning. Bordignon faced 15 batters in 4 1/3 innings and had a career-high six strikeouts. He earned the win on the evening.
Northwestern added to its lead in the third inning when Hopfner doubled down the left field line to bring around Zach Jones to the plate and extend NU's lead to 3-1.
Zeros populated the scoreboard for the next three innings until Jack Dunn scored on a wild pitch. Dunn, who made his collegiate debut earlier in the day, went 1-for-3 at the plate with the run scored.
The Wildcats got an insurance run in the eighth inning when Connor Lind's sacrifice fly scored Hopfner from third base.
Seven Northwestern pitchers saw action in the contest, including Hopfner who came into pitch during the ninth inning and picked up the save.
This is first time that Northwestern has started a season 2-0 since 2008.
Northwestern will return to action tomorrow Saturday, Feb. 20 against Nevada at 6 p.m.
