EVANSTON, Ill. — The Spencer Allen era will officially begin this weekend when Northwestern travels to Mesa, Ariz., for a four-game series against Nevada. All four contests will be hosted at Sloan Park, the spring training home for the Chicago Cubs.

The weekend slate will feature a double-header on Friday, Feb. 19, with first pitch for each game scheduled for 3 p.m. CT and 7 p.m. CT. Single games on both Saturday (7 p.m. CT) and Sunday (12 p.m. CT) will wrap up the opening weekend for the Wildcats.

ON THE BUMP
Allen, who is making his head-coaching debut this weekend, named Joe Schindler the opening day starter. The junior right-hander made 15 appearances for the Wildcats in 2015, which included eight starts and the second-lowest opponent batting average (.286) among Northwestern starting pitchers.

Senior Reed Mason, who led Northwestern's 2015 pitching staff with seven quality starts, will get the ball in Friday's nightcap and junior transfer Josh Davis has earned the nod for Saturday's start. Davis came to Evanston after the 2015 season when the University of Akron cut its program. He appeared in 18 games for the Zips and struck out 43 batters in 44 innings pitched.

The Wildcats have not yet named Sunday's starter.

THE OPPONENT
Like Northwestern, Nevada will also start the 2016 season under the guidance of a new head coach. T.J. Bruce spent the past five seasons as an assistant on UCLA's staff before being named head coach of the Wolf Pack in June of 2015.

Nevada enters the 2016 season as the reigning Mountain West Conference champions. The Wolf Pack posted a 41-15 overall mark last season, which tied the record for most wins in program history.

Senior LHP Christian Stolo, who went 8-2 as a starter last year and was named the Mountain West's Pitcher of the Year, has been tabbed as the game one starter.

Offensively, the Wolf Pack only return three starters from a lineup that led the nation in on base percentage (.418) and ranked second in slugging percentage (.491).

KEEP AN EYE ON THESE GUYS
Seniors Zach Jones and Jake Stolley along with junior Joe Hoscheit were named to the 2016 Big Ten Baseball Players to Watch list earlier this month.

• Jones is the team's top returning hitter after posting 70 hits, 32 runs batted in and 20 doubles in 2015.

• Stolley made 29 appearances out of the bullpen last season and picked up a pair of wins in those outings. The Wildcat closer had a team-high seven saves to go with his team-best 2.98 earned run average.

• Hoscheit was the only member of the Wildcats to start and play in all 54 games last season. He ranked fourth on the team in batting average (.286) and third in hits with 59. Hoscheit also made 10 appearances on the bump in 2015 and posted a 2-2 record with a save.

This weekend's games will not have live streaming video, but fans can follow every play via Live Stats at NUSports.com, on Twitter @NU_SportsLive or on Nevada's radio network.
