Wildcats Earn First Victory of the Spencer Allen Era

2/19/2016 6:30:00 PM | Baseball

MESA, Ariz. — Junior right hander Joe Schindler pitched five scoreless innings, striking out six batters and only surrendered three hits to help lead Northwestern to a 4-2 win over Nevada and earn head coach Spencer Allen his first victory as head coach of the Wildcats.

Schindler was the winning pitcher of record, while Pete Hofman was credited with a save after pitching 1 1/3 innings and striking out one. Nevada's Christian Stolo was credited with the loss on the afternoon.

Northwestern's offense came out firing, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning thanks to singles from both Connor Lind and Jack Claeys that brought home Jake Schieber and Joe Hoscheit. The Wildcats 2-0 lead held through the next five frames due in large part to Schindler's performance on the mound. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hoschiet blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to extend Northwestern's lead to 4-0. The home run was Hoschiet's fifth of his career.

Senior Jake Stolley came in to relieve Schindler in the sixth inning and tossed 2 2/3 innings, giving up one run on a pair of hits. With a runner on third and two outs in the eigth inning, Allen made the call to the pen to bring in Hofman. The Shorewood, Wis., native rung up the only batter he faced in the frame and preserved the #B1GCats, 4-1, lead. Nevada scored a run in the top of the ninth inning, but it was the final run that the Wolf Pack would score.

The Wildcats will turn right back around to begin the nightcap of the doubleheader. Senior Reed Mason will get the ball to start the contest. He led the 2015 roster with seven quality starts.
