Wildcats Stymied by Visiting Nittany Lions

EVANSTON, Ill. – Nia Coffey led the way for the Wildcats with 14 points and seven rebounds and Maggie Lyon scored 13 points while shooting 60 percent from beyond the arc, but Northwestern fell to Penn State 73-54 on Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Coffey, who was recently named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 List, led the Wildcats on offense against Penn State. It has been an historic season for the Northwestern co-captain. After surpassing 1,000 career points in the season opener against Howard, she has been one of just three Division I players to average 20 points and 10 rebounds throughout the season.
Freshman Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah had another strong night, finishing with six points and seven rebounds. She has thrived since breaking into the starting lineup during the latter half of Big Ten play with five games of ten or more rebounds.
Lyon is closing out her Northwestern career in style with a number of strong performances. She shot three-of-five from beyond the arc against Penn State for her 24th double-digit scoring night of the season.
The Wildcats have a road contest at Wisconsin on Saturday before returning to Evanston on Tuesday night for their home finale, when they take on the Michigan Wolverines at 5:30 p.m. inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
