Komoto Leads 'Cats To Top-5 Finish At 2016 Lady Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Junior Kacie Komoto fired a 3-over 219 to secure a share of eighth-place at the 2016 Lady Puerto Rico Classic, pacing four Wildcats in the Top-20 and helping the team to a fifth-place finish on Tuesday at Rio Mar Country Club.
As a group, Northwestern carded an 886 in the 5-count-4 format for the third consecutive year. The Wildcats (T5) were the top finisher among five Big Ten schools in the Lady Puerto Rico Field. Tuesday's final round 298 marked the team's eighth consecutive sub-300 round at Rio Mar dating back to the 2014 event.
2016 Lady Puerto Rico Classic - RESULTS
Komoto, a two-time All-Big Ten honoree in her first two collegiate seasons, ranked sixth in the field with 11 birdies over 54 holes. Her 1-under 71 during Monday's second round was the best 18-hole performance of the tournament for Northwestern, and her 3-over 219 was the best score of any Big Ten golfer in the field.
Reigning Big Ten Player of the Year Hannah Kim was Northwestern's top performer in Tuesday's final round, carding a 1-over 73 to finish the event at 5-over with a share of 13th place. Kim's 10 birdies in Puerto Rico ranked seventh in the field.
Sophomore Sarah Cho and freshman Stephanie Lau rounded out the Wildcats quartet in the Top-20, as both finished the tournament at 7-over (223) to tie for 19th on the leaderboard. Lau ranked among the Top-10 in the field with 37 pars during the three days, while Cho played the tournament's Par-3 holes at 2-under, second-best among all players.
Following a weekend off, the Wildcats will return to competition on Feb. 29 at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by the University of Miami at Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Fla.

This season's edition was the Wildcats eighth consecutive trip to the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The team is coming off its two best performances on The River Course by Greg Norman, a 22-under 886 that secured a third-place finish in 2014, and an identical score in 2015 for a fourth-place result.
Northwestern, No. 6 in the current Golfweek Women's Team Collegiate Rankings, competed against an elite field that included three additional Top-10 programs, two more ranked in the Top-20, and 12 total in the Top-50.
The leaderboard featured No. 5 Georgia, reigning tournament champion No. 8 Arkansas, No. 9 Kent State, No. 18 Iowa State, No. 19 Purdue, No. 27 North Carolina, No. 28 Clemson, No. 29 Louisville State, No. 40 Michigan, No. 45 TCU, No. 49 Augusta State, Auburn and Maryland.
