BUDAPEST, Hungary — The Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA), swimming's international governing body, announced that Northwestern's Jordan Wilimovsky won the 2015 Best Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year award.

Wilimovsky was one of six male swimmers to win an award at the FINA World Aquatics Gala "Soiree de Etoiles" or "Evening of the Stars" event on Sunday night in Budapest, Hungary.

"The FINA recognition was the culmination of an incredible year for Jordan," said Northwestern head coach Jarod Schroeder. "He had a breakthrough at the international level and hopefully he continues that success during this important Olympic year."

In 2015, Wilimovsky made a name for himself on the international swimming scene by first capturing a national title in the 10k at the 2015 Open Water National Championships and then by claiming the 10k world title at the 2015 FINA World Championships. His world title time was over 12 seconds faster than the remainder of the field and secured him a spot on the American roster for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The Malibu, Calif., native is on the USA Swimming National Team's roster for the 1,500-meter freestyle and 10k open water events.
