EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern tallied a conference-best 99 fall Academic All-Big Ten honorees, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Wildcats' total of 99 across six fall sports topped the second-place total of 96 achieved by Michigan State across seven sports.

Football led the way for Northwestern with 34 student-athletes earning the honor. This season is the team's seventh straight with more than 30 Academic All-Big Ten award winners.

Northwestern men's soccer posted the most honorees in its sport with 16, while three other NU programs reached the double-digit total, including women's soccer (17), field hockey (13) and cross country (10). Volleyball rounded out the group with nine.

Individually, Nandi Mehta of women's soccer and Kayla Morin of women's volleyball were among 16 Big Ten fall honorees with perfect grade point averages in their respective academic programs. Morin posted an unblemished 4.0 GPA for the second consecutive year.

In total, the Big Ten honored 1,015 fall student-athletes with Academic All-Big Ten awards. Northwestern earned nearly 10 percent of those awards in a 14-team league.

To earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition, an athlete must be in at least their second year at the institution, letter in their sport and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

Instituted beginning in 2008-09, the conference office also will hand out the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letter winners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The 3.7 GPA benchmark was designed to include the top 10 percent of all eligible student-athletes.
