EVANSTON, Ill. – In their first career Midlands, Northwestern freshmen Ryan Deakin and Sebastian Rivera placed third and fourth respectively to lead the way for the Wildcats.
Deakin, a freshman from Broomfield, Colorado, took home third with a 6-2 win over 16-seed Davion Jeffries of Oklahoma in the nightcap. Deakin beat five seeded wrestlers on his way to the bronze, including wins over No. 3 Alfred Bannister of Maryland and No. 6 Joey Delago of Oregon State to get to his final match. He is 14-4 in his unattached redshirt year.
Rivera earned his way to the semifinals before falling to Nebraska's Tim Lambert, the tournament's second seed and the nation's No. 8 ranked wrestler. He sealed his place in the third place match with a 15-3 major decision over Lucas Malmberg of Messiah, but suffered an injury while ahead 11-0 in that match. He was unable to compete in the third place match and finished fourth as a result.
Senior Jacob Berkowitz and redshirt-sophomore Conan Jennings finished the tournament in eighth place.
Northwestern finished the Midlands in 16th place with 37.5 points.
