EVANSTON, Ill. — Former Northwestern men's soccer goalkeeper Tyler Miller can add Major League Soccer Cup champion to his list of accomplishments.
The Seattle Sounders defeated Toronto FC on Saturday, Dec. 10, to claim the first MLS Cup in franchise history. The two clubs played 120 minutes of scoreless soccer before Seattle prevailed 5-4 in a penalty kick shootout.
Seattle drafted Miller in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. He was originally signed by Sounders FC 2, the Sounders' USL affiliate, in July of 2015 before signing a First Team contract on December 21, 2015.
"I am really happy for Tyler," said Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan. "He came to Northwestern and we won our first Big Ten Conference championship in his first year on campus. He goes to Seattle and the team wins its first MLS Cup in his first full year there. The sky is the limit for Tyler and everyone here at Northwestern is very proud of him."
Miller played in one regular-season game for Seattle, making two saves against Real Salt Lake in the U.S. Open Cup.
Following Saturday's game, MLS Cup MVP and starting Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei credited his performance to his coaches and fellow goalkeepers, including Miller.
Seattle exercised Miller's 2017 contract option on Monday.
The Woodbury, N.J., native was a three-time All-Big Ten first team selection, three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and is the program's all-time leader with 36 shutouts. Miller helped the Wildcats capture two regular-season conference titles (2011, 2012) and the 2011 tournament title.
