Four Wildcats Earn NSCAA All-Region Honors

Lauren Clem, Kayla Sharples, Marisa Viggiano and Hannah Davison capped off a stellar 2016 season, earning National Soccer Coaches Associate of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region honors.
Clem and Sharples were named to the All-Great Lakes Region first team, while Viggiano and Davison were named third-team honorees.
The Big Ten Goalkeeper of the year closed out the year with an NCAA-leading goals against average (.290) and save percentage (.927). In addition, Clem now holds the NU program record for career shutouts by a significant margin after finishing the year with 39-career clean sheets.
Sharples earned her first NSCAA All-Region honor after anchoring a defense that saw a program-best 17 shutouts during the 2016 season, including eight against Big Ten opponents. The Naperville, Illinois, native scored the game-winning goal against Illinois to help the 'Cats clinch their first-ever Big Ten title.
Viggiano, who also earned her first NSCAA All-Region honor, started in all 23 games for the Purple and White in the Wildcats' historic season. The second-year midfielder scored a goal against Maryland and assisted on Sharples' game-winning goal against Illinois.
Davison proved to be a force for the Northwestern backline, making up a fourth of the defense that saw a program-best 17 clean sheets. The sophomore was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13 after leading the Wildcats to wins over Illinois State and Marquette to close out NU's non-conference schedule with a perfect 7-0-0 record. Davison provided the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over the Golden Eagles.
