Dominik Stary Wins Big Ten Singles Title

MADISON, Wis. – Northwestern freshman Dominik Starý got his collegiate career started with a bang, winning the singles title at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Tournament at Wisconsin.
Starý, the overall No. 5 seed, won every match he played in straight sets, dominating the competition on his way to the championship.
"Dominik had a great tournament," head coach Arvid Swan said. "He competed very well throughout the tournament against excellent competition. The win is really significant for Dominik and for our program."
He beat Ohio State's Kyle Seelig, the No. 3 seed, in the final, 6-2, 7-5, to complete his six-match sweep that began Friday.
Starý beat Alex Jesse (Illinois), Brett Forman (Michigan State), Hunter Tubert (Ohio State), Matt Mendez (Ohio State), Chema Carranza (Wisconsin) and Seelig.
He is the first Northwestern player to win the title since Raleigh Smith in 2012 and the first Wildcat freshman to do so since Don Lutz in 1968.
Teammate Jason Seidman advanced to the semifinals, but the all-Northwestern final was foiled by Seelig's win over Seidman.
Seidman, a sophomore and the No. 7 seed, won all four of his matches in straight sets to make it to the semifinals.

The 2017 regular season begins Jan. 15 with a match at Vanderbilt. The Wildcats' home opener is against TCU on Jan. 20.
