MADISON, Wis. – Northwestern sent four of its six underclassmen to the Big Ten Singles and Doubles tournament this weekend at Wisconsin, and after one day, everybody is on the board with a win.
Freshman Dominik Starý, the overall No. 5 seed, and sophomore Jason Seidman, the No. 7 seed, advanced to Saturday's Round of 16 with a pair of wins Friday.
Starý opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Illinois' Alex Jesse and won by the exact same score in the next round against Michigan State's Brett Forman. He is set to face Hunter Tubert of Ohio State tomorrow afternoon.
Seidman also won both of his contests in straight sets, knocking out Michigan State's Billy Shisler in the first round, 6-3, 6-2, before moving on to beat Jonas Larsen of Iowa, 7-5, 6-3. He will take on Larsen's teammate, Robin Haden, in the Round of 16.
Both of the other Wildcats in action, sophomore Michael Lorenzini and freshman Chris Ephron, won their first round matches but fell in the second round. Lorenzini won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Iowa's Tony Leto before dropping a tough second set tiebreak against Wisconsin's Lamar Remy. Ephron beat Zach Lieb of Penn State and won the first set against Chema Carranza of Wisconsin in the second round but dropped each of the next two frames.
Ephron and Seidman partnered up in doubles for a pair of wins, advancing themselves to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. The duo took down Dylan Bednarczyk and Toby Boyer of Nebraska, 6-3, before upsetting the No. 3 seeded tandem of Matt Galush and Christian Lutschaunig of Penn State, 7-5.
They will face Iowa's Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
