EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year after a dominating win over the Kent State Golden Flashes, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.

The game got off to a quick start as the 'Cats first opportunity came in the 5th minute. The ball bounced around after a corner kick before finding Grace Orndorff, who nailed a shot just inch high of the goal post.

Two minutes later, Kent State mustered up its first quality chance of the game. The Golden Flashes utilized a free kick kick that sailed to the top of the box for a header attempt toward the goal line, however, the Golden Flashes were called off side and the goal was called back.

Despite the early threat from Kent State, the 'Cats controlled the rest of the game.

Northwestern broke through in the 17th minute off a corner kick by sophomore Marisa Viggiano. The ball looped high to the right post where All-Big Ten First Team member Kayla Sharples was waiting with a header. The sophomore sent the ball into the far side of the net to give NU an early 1-0 lead.

The 'Cats added on in the 19th minute when fifth-year senior Nandi Mehta finished off a penalty kick. Mehta kicked a bullet to the top left of the net to extend Northwestern's lead.

Chicago's Big Ten Team held off any chance of a Kent State come back in the second half. The Golden Flashes' only major chance of a goal came in the 75th minute when they were given a free kick just outside the box. After a low kick, the ball bounced around before the Flashes rebounded for three-straight shots, but it was no match for NU's defense as the third attempt sailed over the net.

Northwestern tacked on another insurance goal with less than 10 minutes to play to solidify a 3-0 contest. Marisa Viggiano led Rachel Zampa to a hole on the left side of the box where she crossed it to a charging, wide open Kassidy Gorman, who tapped it in for the 'Cats.

The Wildcats once again took advantage of their standout defense, recording their 16th shutout of the year. Up next, the 'Cats will travel to Durham, N.C. to face SIUE in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
