DURHAM, N.C. – Northwestern is headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1998 courtesy of a 1-0 win over SIUE in the second round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament.
The Wildcats dictated play for the majority of the game, outshooting the Cougars 11-5 overall and 9-2 in shots on goal. Northwestern also earned four corners to SIUE's one. The NU defense showcased yet another solid performance as the 'Cats registered their 17th shutout of the year.
"We are absolutely thrilled," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "It was a tough match-up. They made it very difficult, they kept the field compact, and they hit hard. So to come away with a victory, we did enough. We can always count on our defense to have a good performance. The all-time best for this program is the Sweet 16 and it excites [the team] to match that."
Northwestern attacked early and jumped on the board in 10th minute. Kaitlin Moore fed a through-ball to Kassidy Gorman who shook off an SIUE defender and went head on with goalkeeper Juli Rossi as the junior slipped in the opening goal to the far right post for the Wildcats.
Chicago's Big Ten Team continued to threaten, drawing three quick corner kicks after its first goal of the game. The 'Cats created some quality chances, but could not add an insurance goal.
After 45 minutes of play, Northwestern entered the halftime break with a 1-0 lead after outshooting the Cougars, 8-4.
The second frame began with back-and-forth action as both team's pressured their opposition. The 'Cats best chance of the half came in the 79th minute when Olivia Korhonen accepted a long ball from Gorman. The sophomore was able to shake off an SIUE defender for a clean look at goal, but Rossi collected her eighth save of the game.
After an action-packed half, Gorman's early goal proved to be the difference maker as Northwestern punched its tickets to the Sweet 16 with the win. This is the second time the Wildcats will make an appearance in the NCAA Round of 16, and the first since 1998.
"This feels amazing," Gorman said. "We have had a lot of support especially from our alumni base, who set the record in 1998. To have them push us and want us to beat their record is unbelievable. We have had so much support from everyone - our team, our coaches, our families, and our athletic department and we are so thanful."
Northwestern will face the winner of Duke and Illinois State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT in Durham, N.C.
