LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – The Northwestern women's fencing team kicked off the 2016-17 season with a strong showing at home at the Remenyik Open this weekend, highlighted by a silver medal for senior Stella Pointeau and a bronze medal for senior Cindy Oh.
The Wildcats hosted the individual USFA competition in Libertyville, Ill. and had 27 fencers compete in the senior competition across the three weapon groups. Four of the 27 fencers competed in the junior (U-20) competition for epee.
Stella Pointeau led the way in foil with her second place finish. Pointeau was seeded eighth out of pools with a 5-1 record and then won four straight elimination bouts before falling in the gold medal bout. Northwestern captured second through sixth place in the event with Sharon Chen and Kaila Budofsky tied for third, Yvonne Chart in fifth, and Stephanie Chan in sixth. Stefani Kahookele and Sarit Kapon also finished in the top ten.
Cindy Oh went undefeated in pools to earn the top seed. She went on to win three elimination matches before losing in the semifinals to tie for third in sabre, the highest finish out of the six Wildcat fencers in the group. Emine Yucel, Sacha Bazzal and Maddy Curzon all finished in the top ten.
Freshman Pauline Hamilton made a strong impression in her collegiate debut. She finished fifth in the senior epee, the highest Northwestern finish, and also won the junior epee competition. Freshman Aahana Chatterjee and sophomore Ella Lombard finished in the top-ten in the junior epee competition.
