#B1GCats earn 3rd place finish at Illini Open

URBANA, Ill. -- In their second appearance at the University of Illinois Arboretum this season, the Wildcats placed 3rd out of the seven-team field ahead of Illinois in the Women's 5K. Three Northwestern runners earned a spot in the Top-20 with Hannah Anderson leading the way across the finish line for the team for the second time this season.
2016 Illini Open -- FINAL RESULTS
Sophomore Hannah Anderson placed 8th, finishing at a time of 18:46.4 (6:04.5 average mile). Behind her, Senior Andrea Ostenso completed the course in 19:01.5 (6:09.4 average mile) placing 13th and Senior Ellen Schmitz secured 20th place with a time of 19:15.4 (6:13.9 average mile).
The Wildcats continued to demonstrate a solid effort as Sophomore Ashley Ko improved upon her last 5K time by 44 seconds, completing the course in 19:36.2 (6:20.6) to claim 33rd. Senior Elena Miller finished in 19:59.0 placing 39th, followed by Senior Hannah Rose in 51st (20:53.5) and Freshman Mackenzie Wilson in 54th (21:08.7).
The kind of effort the Wildcats will need to individually contribute in order to succeed in the next couple of races showed in today's performance. "We have been having some solid practices recently and today was about becoming race ready for the championship portion of the season. We put the effort out there and that is what I was hoping to see from this group," said Head Coach 'A Havahla Haynes.
Up next, the 'Cats will participate in the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, October 30th. The meet will be held at Minnesota's Les Bolstad Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. at 10 a.m. Click here for meet info.
