A Pinning Machine
• Dominick Malone has been a pinning machine so far this season, winning eight of his 15 matches by fall. He has outscored his opponents in back points, 62-4.
• All of Malone's falls have come in the first period. His fastest was a 45 second pin of teammate Ian Cramer at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 15. He has two other pins in less than a minute - a 56 second win over Scott Stevens of Franklin & Marshall in the Wildcats 30-18 win at the Grapple at the Garden and a 58 second fall at the Midlands of CSU Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera.
• Malone leads the team with 15 wins. He won eight in a row from Nov. 15 to Dec. 13 and has won five of his last six. Three of his four losses are to ranked opponents.
A Rivalry Brewing
• Northwestern junior Jason Tsirtsis and Iowa sophomore Brandon Sorensen can safely be considered rivals at 149 lbs. The two have met four times, winning two each and going to extra time in three of the matches. Neither has scored more than three points on the other in any match.
• Three of the four matchups have come in tournaments, with a meeting each at the 2015 Big Ten Championships, NCAA Championships and Midlands Championships.
• Sorensen won the first ever meeting, a 3-2 decision in the second tiebreak in a dual at Iowa, but Tsirtsis responded with a win in the Big Ten title match and another in the third-place match at NCAAs in St. Louis, Mo. Sorensen evened up the series with a 3-1 win in sudden victory in the finals of the Midlands on Dec. 30.
Tournament Ready
• Northwestern moved into the top-25 of InterMat's weekly tournament poll on Jan. 5, coming in at No. 23 on the heels of a top-10 finish at the Midlands. Northwestern scored 61 points to place ninth with two individual place winners. Three wrestlers came within one match of the medal stand.
Only the Best at Welsh-Ryan
• Northwestern has five home duals during the 2015-16 season and all of them are against teams currently ranked. Fans saw the Wildcats take on No. 7 Ohio State (Dec. 18) and will get the chance to watch Northwestern wrestle No. 2 Iowa (Jan. 10), No. 1 Penn State (Jan. 17), No. 21 Minnesota (Feb. 5) and No. 24 Duke (Feb. 19).
