Northwestern Match Notes

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern wrestling will take on its fourth consecutive top-10 team this weekend when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face No. 6 Michigan Friday night at 6 p.m. CT.

The Wildcats will then head to East Lansing, Mich. for a Sunday matinee vs. Michigan State at noon CT. The Spartans will be the first unranked team Northwestern has faced since Dec. 13.

Both matches will be streamed live on BTN Plus. Fans will be able to follow along with the Michigan match via TrackWrestling. Links can be found in the table at the top of this page.

These will be the first meetings between the teams since January 2013.

FRESH FACES
• Eight of the 10 matchups between Northwestern and Michigan will feature first-time meetings between the wrestlers.
• Only the 133 and 141 lbs. matches will showcase competitors who have met before. Dominick Malone and Rossi Bruno have split a pair of matches at 133 lbs., both of which have come in the postseason, and Jameson Oster is 1-0 against George Fisher at 141 lbs.

TOUGH STRETCH
Jason Tsirtsis will wrestle his fifth consecutive top-six opponent on Friday when he faces Michigan's No. 6 Alec Pantaleo at 149 lbs.
• The stretch began in the semifinals of the Midlands Championships with a 3-1 win over No. 4 Alexander Richardson (Old Dominion) and continued with two straight matches against No. 2 Brandon Sorensen (Iowa) and a match with No. 1 Zain Retherford (Penn State) in Northwestern's last time out.
• As a team, Northwestern is also in the midst of the hardest part of the schedule as No. 6 Michigan represents the fourth straight top-10 opponent. The Wildcats wrestled then-No. 7 Ohio State on Dec. 18 before taking a break for the Midlands and have since picked up against No. 2 Iowa, No. 1 Penn State and now No. 6 Michigan.

INTO THE FIRE
• Season-ending injuries to two projected starters have enabled two true freshman to be plugged into the Northwestern lineup this year. Luke Norland has been wrestling all season at 165 lbs. and has won three matches in place of Johnny Sebastian, while Anthony Petrone made his collegiate debut at 157 lbs. against Iowa in place of Bryce Brill.
• Norland has won two of his matches by fall, including one at the Midlands. He was the only Wildcat wrestler to avoid a bonus point decision in the dual against Iowa last Sunday, Jan. 10. The Okoboji, Iowa native registered 91 of his 170 high school wins by fall. He won the 2015 Minnesota state championship.
• Petrone faced a tough test in his first ever match against Iowa's No. 16 Edwin Cooper, Jr. Petrone posted a high school winning percentage of .864 and was a 2013 Florida state champion and five-time state placewinner, including in eighth grade.
• Petrone's first two matches have come against ranked foes, including his last versus Jason Nolf of Penn State, who was ranked No. 3 at the time of the dual. He will again see a top-10 wrestler when he takes on No. 9 Brian Murphy of Michigan.
