Northwestern Falls on the Road to No. 7 Ohio State

1/28/2016 8:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Nia Coffey paced Northwestern (13-8, 2-7 B1G) with 28 points in a game that featured five ties and 12 lead changes, but No. 7 Ohio State (16-4, 8-1 B1G) came out on top, 76-73, on Thursday night at Value City Arena.

Coffey led a trio of Wildcats in double figures for the 21st-consecutive game. Classmate Christen Inman contributed 18, while senior Maggie Lyon chipped in 14 points. Freshman Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah showcased an impressive defensive performance with 16 rebounds and a pair of steals, while adding six points of her own.

Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 27 points as four Buckeyes scored in double digits.

Ohio State opened the scoring early, but the Wildcats were quick to respond thanks to a jumper from Coffey. The teams exchanged buckets in the early goings before Northwestern used an 8-2 run to gain a five-point lead after 10 minutes of action.

Lyon used a layup to open the second frame, but Ohio State began to chip away at the deficit. The Buckeyes came within one with 4:24 left in the half, but it was not enough to stop the #B1GCats from entering the halftime break with a 34-30 advantage.

Northwestern got off to a slow start in the second half as Ohio State pulled ahead with an 8-0 run right out of the gates. The resilient 'Cats came back scratching and scored 12 unanswered points – capped with a Lyon triple – to take back control of the game.

NU went ahead by as much as nine in the third quarter, but Kelsey Mitchell converted a 4-point play to close the gap to just two.

The contest came down to the wire as the fourth quarter that saw five lead changes. OSU built up a six-point lead with 12 seconds left before Coffey drained a 3-pointer to keep the 'Cats in the game. Inman grabbed the steal on an inbound play and fed the ball to Lyon at the top of the key in an attempt to tie the game, but Lyon's effort fell just short.

The Wildcats return to the hardwood on Sunday, Jan. 31, to host Iowa. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., and will be streamed live on BTNPlus on BTN2Go.
