Northwestern Dominates Big Ten Matchup Versus Iowa

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Wildcats outperformed Iowa on Saturday, notching consistent first-place finishes and defeating their Big Ten foe, 190.5-109.5.

Mary Warren captured her second NCAA 'B' qualification of the season in the 50 free with her first-place time of 22.94. Her finish also improved her season-best in the event. Annika Winsnes (Singapore/United World College) took home third.
After first-place streaks and three Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Immaculate Heart) continued her torrent of a season. In the 1-meter diving competition, she broke a pool record with her score of 317.63.
Behind her, Eryn Scannell (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc), Monique Demaisip (Norwalk, Calif./Gahr), and Mashal Hashem (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) finished second through fourth.
From the 3-meter springboard, Rosendahl again took first (347.93). Scannell was the next top Wildcat finisher, scoring 258.83 points.
The 'Cats notched an exhilarating victory in the 400 free relay, as Northwestern's 'A' group was in a dead heat with Iowa's top quartet throughout the race. In the end, Winsnes gained an advantage in the final leg, and the 'A' team finished in 3:25.11.
Northwestern logged a 1-2 finish in the 1,000 free, as Lauren Abruzzo (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) and Ellen Anderson (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) took home the top two spots, finishing in 10:09.66 and 10:11.39, respectively.
In the 500 free, Northwestern notched a 1-2-3 finish, with Anderson, Abruzzo, and Emily Launer (DeKalb, Ill./Rosary) taking the top spots. Anderson swam the event in 4:59.64.
Annika Winsnes (Singapore/United World College) returned to her winning ways in the 200 free, registering a first-place time of 1:51.00. Emily Launer (DeKalb, Ill./Rosary) finished in fourth.
In the 100 free, Winsnes registered a first-place finish, just as she has every time out in the event this season. She swam it in 50.86, while Mary Warren (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) registered a second-place time of 51.51.
The #B1GCats took back-to-back first place finishes, as Lacey Locke (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) swam the 100 back in 55.71. Melissa Postoll (Acworth, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) swam a third-place time of 56.80
In the longer backstroke event, the Wildcats took home a 1-2 finish, as Locke and Postoll registered the top spots in the 200 back.
For the third time on the day, Locke took home a first-place spot. This time, she did it at the 200 IM, swimming in 2:05.33. Greenberg and Postoll registered second- and third-place finishes.
In the 200 fly, Maddy Sims (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) registered the top spot with a swim of 2:02.91. Alex Grimes (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) and Ellen Stello (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood) finished 3-4.
Sims later took a second-place spot in the 100 fly, finishing in 56.20. Grimes finished right behind her in third (56.64).
The Wildcats started off competition narrowly falling to Iowa's 'A' team in the 200 medley relay, coming in at a second-place 1:43.39.
Katie Branch (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors), who has been NU's top swimmer in the 100 breast this season, turned in a time of 1:05.19 in the event, good for second place. Peyton Greenberg (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) and Julianne Kurke (Atlanta, Ga./Parkview) also collected points for the 'Cats, finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
In the 200 breast, Greenberg and Branch finished 2-3, with Greenberg swimming the event in 2:18.78 and Branch in 2:21.51.
Northwestern is back in the pool next weekend versus Minnesota and Purdue at the Norris Aquatics Center. Friday's action will begin at 5 p.m., and Saturday's events will start at noon.
