Jennings Wins Big for Northwestern; Penn State Takes the Dual

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern heavyweight Conan Jennings was a big winner on Sunday afternoon, taking down Penn State's Wes Phipps by a 10-0 major decision, but the Wildcats dropped the dual to No. 1 Penn State, 46-4, at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Jennings piled up points in the second and third periods to secure the first Big Ten victory of his young Northwestern career. The win was his fifth of the season.
Fourth-ranked Jason Tsirtsis was matched up against No. 1 Zain Retherford at 149 lbs., a week after being forced out of a match against Iowa's Brandon Sorensen due to injury. While the match started tight, Tsirtsis couldn't get any momentum going and lost, 15-5.
True freshman Luke Norland wrestled No. 16 Shakur Rasheed at 165 lbs. The freshman ended up wrestling one of the closest matches of the day. He was able to stymie most of Rasheed's shots but the Nittany Lion came away with a 6-0 win.
Chicago's Big Ten Team has a week off before heading to Michigan for a dual on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. CT. Northwestern also goes to Michigan State on Sunday, Jan. 31 for a meet beginning at noon.
