EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern sophomore Dylan Wu and volunteer assistant coach Tim Streng have advanced to the sectional qualifying stage for the 2016 U.S. Open Championship during recent local qualifying tournaments.
Â
Six NU players – along with Streng – competed at two different sites: including Chicago and South Bend, Indiana.
Â
Wu advanced to sectionals after finishing third at May 9 Village Links local qualifier, while Streng moved on with a second-place finish. Wu shot 2-under 70 in a field of 83 entries, earning one of Village Links' five spots that advance to one of the 10 June 6 sectional qualifying locations. Streng finished at 3-under 69 to advance.
Â
Sophomore Sam Triplett, fifth-year senior Harley Abrams, senior Andrew Whalen and freshman Pete Griffith competed at Village Links, while first-year Luke Miller played at Morris Park Country Club in South Bend. Miller finished second overall at even par, but fell short in a playoff to advance.
Â
Whalen carded three birdies on the front nine, en route a 15th-place finish at 2-over 74. Triplett fired a 75 to come in 18th, while Abrams finished 27th overall at 5-over 77. Griffith rounded out the Wildcats' performance in the Village Links top 50.
Â
Still with NCAA golf to be played in 2016, Wu and the Wildcats are slated to compete May 16-18 at the Stillwater, Oklahoma Regional of the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club.
