'Cats Can't Capitalize, Fall to Gonzaga 1-0

9/5/2015 8:34:00 PM | Men's Soccer

SPOKANE, Wash. — Despite a handful of opportunities and playing with a man advantage the final 24 minutes of Saturday's contest, Northwestern was unable to find the back of the net and was shutout for the second-straight contest by Gonzaga, 1-0.

The Wildcats (0-2-1) mustered just three shots in the first half and gave up a goal on a deflection to trail 1-0, but pushed forward on the attack in the second half in an effort to tie the game. The 'Cats had a great opportunity in the 64th minute off a corner kick when a heel flick from senior Henry Herrill found junior Getenet Tuji in the box, but Tuji's attempt was too hard and sailed over the crossbar.

"We really battled today," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We gave up a deflected goal in the first half and threw everything we had at them to get the equalizer but just couldn't put one in. We grew as a team today!"

As the 'Cats pushed to square the game, some chippy play led to a man-up advantage for Northwestern when the Bulldogs' (2-1-1) Jakob Glanlund was issued a red card in the 68th minute.

Tuji had another opportunity a couple minutes later when he was able to get another look inside the box, but he was unable to get much behind the shot and Chris Lowrimore made an easy save to his right.

Senior Joey Calistri gave Chicago's Big Ten Team another opportunity in the 77th minute when he played a ball to classmate Jeffrey Hopson in front of the net, but Lowrimore beat Hopson to the ball before he could get a head on it.

Sophomore Elo Ozumba was able to put a header on net in the 77th minute, but Lowrimore made his fourth and final save as the 'Cats were unable to get another shot off down the stretch.

The Wildcats are back in action on Friday, Sept. 11 when they open Big Ten play and play their first game at Toyota Park against Ohio State.
