Calistri Strikes Twice in 2-1 Win over Ohio State
9/11/2015 9:26:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Seniors Cole Missimo and Joey Calistri provided just the spark the Northwestern men's soccer program needed and classmate Zak Allen came up with a huge save in the waning moments as the Wildcats opened Big Ten play with a victory over Ohio State, 2-1.,
Calistri scored both goals for the Wildcats (1-2-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten), both on assists from Missimo. Junior Jeffrey Hopson and freshman Camden Buescher were also credited with assists in the contests.,
"Just getting the opening win of the season... We had a tough weekend on the west coast last weekend," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "To be able to bounce back and get a result here today, we really needed it. This group really needed it. We did what we needed to do getting Cole and Joey involved. When those two guys are doing good things, good things are going to happen for us. We hung on. Ohio State threw everything at us when they made some adjustments and really put us under a lot of pressure. Luckily the clock ran out and we were able to hang out. Any Big Ten win is a big win, especially against Ohio State.",
Calistri Finds the Net Twice
After being held without a goal in the first three contests of the season, the Wildcats' active career leader in goals finally got on the board in the 18th minute. A pass from Hopson allowed Missimo to attack the baseline where he found Calistri open in the front of the net. Calistri buried the shot for his 28th career goal.,
The two-man combo hooked up again in the second half to extend the lead to 2-0. Similiarly, a lead in pass from the midfield, this time from Buescher, allowed Missimo to attack the goalkeeper only to open a crease for a streaking Calistri. The pass was timed perfectly and Calistri made a diving header goal for the 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute.,
Nearly a Shutout
After being shutout by the Buckeyes in the Big Ten opener last season, Chicago's Big Ten Team was looking to return the favor and nearly did thanks in large part to senior Zak Allen's four saves. However, the Buckeyes were able to score for the first time in over 300 minutes when the 'Cats gave up an own goal in the 82nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Ohio State's Kyle Culbertson played the ball into the box off the corner, only for a Northwestern defender to knock it into the back of the net for the own goal.,
Allen's Big Save
The fourth and final save of Allen's night came with just 11 seconds left in the match. Ohio State pushed to tie the game and drew a foul just outside the box with 89:49 on the clock. Liam Doyle lined up and fired a shot through a pack of Northwestern defenders only for Allen to make a diving save and preserve the victory. A hard foul by the Buckeyes followed the save and the they were given their second yellow card of the second half allowing Allen to send a ball deep and the clock to run out.,
"Really big save. Deflected on a free kick and Zak is a very good shot stopper," Lenahan said. "We needed his ability there. We were a little bit unlucky on the own goal, otherwise we might have got a shutout there. Like I said, I'll take a win here. Any time you get a Big Ten win, no one is going to complain.,
Up Next
The Wildcats will have a quick turnaround as they return to Toyota Park on Monday for a non-conference tilt against UCF. The Golden Knights are 1-2-0 on the year after suffering a tough defeat on a goal in the 87th minute against North Florida.,
