Northwestern posts first win over a ranked team this season
LANCASTER, Pa. β Dominique Masters recorded a hat trick as 10th-ranked Northwestern took down its first ranked opponent of the season Sunday, defeating No. 13 Boston College 3-1.
Β
The Wildcats (2-2) scored a pair of first-half goals and then held off a late charge from the Eagles who were coming off a 3-2 overtime win over No. 3 Maryland on Friday. Boston College represented the third ranked foe Northwestern has faced already this season following on the heels of tough losses to top-ranked Connecticut and No. 5 Duke.
"We were resilient today against a great BC team," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "We started very strong and BC came out very strong in the second half. It was a total team effort."
Β
NU got things going early as Masters tallied a goal off an assist from Charlotte Vaziri just under four minutes into the match. Northwestern added an insurance goal at the 21:53 mark when Masters notched her second goal of the match to make it 2-0. Eva van Agt was credited with an assist on the play.
Β
The 'Cats dominated the action in the opening half as they out-shot Boston College 8-4, including holding a 7-0 edge in shots on goal.
Β
The Eagles put the pressure on the Wlldcats throughout the second half as they looked to cut into their deficit. Despite Boston College's efforts, Northwestern was able to withstand its opponent, denying the Eagles on their first 11 penalty corners of the contest.
Β
Boston College finally was able to break through off a corner with 2:24 remaining in regulation as Emily McCoy tallied a goal off a corner to get the Eagles within 2-1. Following a timeout, BC opted to pull its goalie for an extra attacker as it sought the tying goal.
Β
However, Northwestern held the Eagles at bay and earned one last penalty corner of their own with no time remaining on the clock. The Wildcats tacked on one final goal for aesthetics with Masters finishing off her hat trick off assists from Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin.
Β
The Wildcats return to action at 2 p.m. Central time Tuesday when they wrap up their season-opening road trip at Ball State.
