Mehta's 93rd-Minute Golden Goal Stuns No. 11 Rutgers

9/27/2015 2:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer

By Preston Michelson, Northwestern Correspondent

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Northwestern (9-1-2, 3-0-1 Big Ten) shocked a fierce opponent in No. 11 Rutgers (8-2-0, 1-2-0 Big Ten) with a golden goal by senior Nandi Mehta in the 93rd minute on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Park.

It was a game of possession, as both teams combined for only 14 shots throughout the match. Rutgers, who had not allowed a goal this season until Thursday's match versus Illinois, was a dominating presence on defense. The score was tied at zero after 90 minutes of regulation to force the game into overtime.

Four minutes into the first overtime period, junior Rachel Zampa was double teamed and weaved her way around a pair of Rutgers defenders. She found Mehta who, in turn, launched a ball over the Rutgers backline and found the game-winner. It was Mehta's second goal of the season and the third of her career.

Rutgers created the first quality chance of the match when junior Madison Tiernan put up a shot, but freshman Michele Chernesky made the stop to keep the match scoreless.

In the middle of the first half, Northwestern got a break as a would-be goal in the 31st minute by sophomore Colby Ciarrocca of Rutgers was called off because she was offside. Later on in the half, Mehta had a free kick in the 44th minute that was fielded by Scarlet Knights goalkeeper Casey Murphy.

Junior Addie Steiner led the Wildcats' offense by firing four shots, including three on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Clem continued her excellent play this season with her eighth shutout of the year.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will ride its eight-game unbeaten streak into next weekend's match up against Penn State. NU will host the Nittany Lions on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 12 p.m. CST.
