BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — No. 24 Northwestern (9-2-2, 3-1-1 Big Ten) fell to a tough Big Ten opponent in No. 12 Penn State (8-2-2, 3-1-1) on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Park, 3-0, snapping the Wildcats' eight-game unbeaten streak.
Senior Mallory Weber, who leads the Nittany Lions in points, scored the first goal of the match in the ninth minute, catching sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Clem out of place. Sophomore Emily Ogle gave Weber the helper, notching her second assist of the season.
Another Penn State goal followed soon thereafter as senior Raquel Rodriguez fired a shot from long distance and found the back of the net. Rodriguez beat out freshman Marisa Viggiano and nailed a shot from open space to extend the Nittany Lion's lead in the 27th minute, 2-0.
In the final minutes of the match, Penn State added another insurance goal as freshman Alina Ortega-Jurado launched a shot over Clem from 20 yards out.
On the Wildcats' side of the ball, senior co-captain Nandi Mehta led the team in shots.
The 'Cats look to recover on Thursday, October 8, as the squad travels north to take on the Michigan Wolverines. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m. CT in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
