Flens and van Agt tally goals for Northwestern
The Hoosiers benefited from four saves by defenders to prevent Northwestern goals to earn their second win over a ranked opponent of the weekend after also defeating No. 16 Iowa 3-1 on Friday.
The hosts were the first to dent the scoreboard as Karen Lorite scored at the 8:46 mark, giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats got back to square at 16:54 when freshman Eva van Agt finished off a feed from Dominique Masters for her seventh goal of the season.
However, Indiana wasted little time in regaining the edge when Lorite found Maddie Latino for the goal to put the hosts up 2-1.
The rest of the half belonged to Northwestern, though. Masters had back-to-back shots saved by Noelle Rother, but moments later van Agt connected with Isabel Flens for her team-leading 11th tally of the year to knot the score once again.
NU would earn four penalty corners over the final five minutes of the opening half, but IU defenders made three saves while Rother made another to keep the game tied at the intermission.
Northwestern finished the opening 35 minutes of play with an 11-5 edge in shots, including 8-2 in shots on goal.
The Wildcats nearly took their first lead seven minutes into the second half after Lauren Bernardi earned a penalty corner. A wild flurry in front of the cage featured a shot by Flens that went off the post, but Indiana managed to hold the 'Cats at bay.
A counter attack by Indiana following a second consecutive corner by Northwestern resulted in the Hoosiers taking their third lead of the contest. A clearing attempt in front of the NU cage ended up finding the stick of Latino who deflected it into the goal at the 43:26 mark.
Yet another defensive save by Indiana prevented the Wildcats from tying the match again. Masters ended up with a wide-open goal as Rother was out of position, but Malia Fujisawa was in the right place at the right time to get her stick in the way in front of the goal line to prevent the score.
The 'Cats appeared to have tied the game in the 51st minute when Charlotte Martin beat Rother off a penalty corner, but after it was originally called a goal, it was ruled that the shot came from just outside the top of the circle.
Indiana did well to limit Northwestern's opportunities from that point forward, but the Wildcats had once good chance left when they earned a corner with two minutes to go in regulation. Flens' ensuing shot was on target, but Rother made a diving stop to prevent the tying goal as the Hoosiers were able to hold on for the upset.
Northwestern finished the match with a 20-9 advantage in shots, including 14-5 on goal, while also holding an 11-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Wildcats return to action at home Friday when they take on Iowa. The contest gets underway at 2:30 p.m.
