Wildcats earn first shutout of Hawkeyes in 11 years
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Caroline Troncelliti scored a pair of goals and Northwestern shut out Iowa for the first time in 11 years as the 14th-ranked Wildcats downed the 18th-ranked Hawkeyes 4-0 Friday on a blustery afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The four-goal margin of victory was the largest for NU over Iowa since a 4-0 victory on Oct. 16, 1994.
The Wildcats set the tone early on in the contest, earning three penalty corners in the first seven minutes of action and dominating possession. Northwestern picked up its fourth corner of the game in the 12th minute of play and the 'Cats cashed in to take the lead. After Lauren Bernardi's initial shot was saved by Alexandra Pecora, Troncelliti was there waiting to knock it home to make it 1-0.
The Hawkeyes had nearly tied the game in the 29th minute when Big Ten leading scorer Stephanie Norlander clanged a shot off the crossbar.
NU controlled the action to the tune of advantages of 10-2 in shots and 9-0 in penalty corners over the opening 35 minutes of play, but had to settle for the one-goal lead heading into halftime.
The 'Cats finally got the insurance goal they were looking for 6:32 into the second half when the team's lone corner of the stanza resulted in a tally. Puck Pentenga's shot was blocked but Troncelliti cleaned it up for her eighth goal of the season as the lead grew to two.
Three and a half minutes later, the Wildcats added to to their lead to help put the game out of reach. Charlotte Martin took a restart from outside the circle and her entry was deflected by Pentenga past Pecora. The goal was the first for Pentenga in her collegiate career.
Northwestern tacked on one final goal at 66:37. On a counter-attack, Troncelliti went in search of a hat trick and got in on Pecora. The Iowa goalkeeper was able to make the initial save, but Eva van Agt finished at the goalline for her eighth goal of the year to cap the scoring.
Lindsay von der Luft made four saves in goal for the Wildcats to earn her third shutout of the season. NU finished the match with edges of 15-9 in shots and 10-5 in corners.
The Wildcats return to action at 3 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 9) when they take on Stanford at Lakeside Field.
