Sebo Nets Goal in 1-1 2OT Draw at Indiana

9/20/2015 1:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Fifth-year senior Niki Sebo scored her second goal of the year as Northwestern earned a 1-1 draw at Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Yeagley Field.

The Wildcats applied a lot of early pressure on Indiana's defense as junior Addie Steiner launched two shots on goal in the early minutes of the game. NU was unable to capitalize, but continued to showcase a strong attack.

Chicago's Big Ten Team drew a free kick just 10 minutes into action, and senior Nandi Mehta sent a ball into the cluttered goalmouth. Hannah Davison attempted to nail a header between the pipes for the game's opening goal, but the freshman defender was unable to get a piece of the ball.

Both teams presented quality chances throughout the first frame, but the game remained scoreless into halftime.

The #B1GCats entered the second half scratching and jumped on the board just 90 seconds into the restart. Sebo broke the deadlock with a leaping header to the near post off a well-placed corner kick from Mehta.

Northwestern dominated time of possession for most of the second half, but Indiana found the equalizer with 12 minutes left in regulation. Sophomore Kayla Smith sent a ball to the penalty area before junior Lauren Joray slipped it right past an outstretched Lauren Clem to level the score, 1-1.

NU could not find the go-ahead goal in regulation and sent the game into extra minutes.

Four minutes into the first overtime period, Nikia Smith launched a long ball inside the box and found Steiner who got a piece of the ball. The junior forward aimed a powerful header toward the back of the net, but Indiana keeper Sarah Stone recorded her fifth save of the game.

The overtime battle between Indiana and Northwestern was action packed as both teams pushed each other for attempts at the golden goal. Neither side could find the game breaker however, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Northwestern kicks off a three-game homestand against Maryland on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Toyota Park. Game time is set for 7 p.m. CT.
