Troncelliti and Flens record two goals apiece
The contest opened a busy stretch of three home games in five days for the Wildcats prior to the start of the Big Ten season.
It took Northwestern (4-2) a little while to get things going against the Dragons, but once they did the floodgates opened. Ten minutes into the opening stanza, the Wildcats had good chances off of penalty corners, but Drexel goalkeeper Ainslie Rhoads came up with a pair of big saves to keep the game scoreless.
NU finally cashed in just prior to the midway point of the half as they earned another corner. Charlotte Martin's initial shot at point-blank range was blocked but the rebound came to freshman Eva van Agt who finished for her third goal of the season at the 16:48 mark to put the hosts up 1-0.
Nearly seven minutes later, the Wildcats got an insurance goal thanks to the play-making of Lauren Bernardi. The redshirt junior worked her way to the front of the cage and found Troncelliti all alone at the far post for a tip-in goal to make it 2-0. The duo teamed up once again a little over two minutes later when Bernardi again found Troncelliti for her second goal of the day and the season and the rout was on.
Northwestern would tally its third goal over a four-minute span at 27:34 when Flens got into the act, scoring a penalty-corner goal. Lisa McCarthy and Sophia Miller were credited with assists on the play as the advantage grew to 4-0. The tally forced the Dragons to lift Rhoads from goal in favor of Erin Gilchrist.
The 'Cats would take the four-goal lead into the intermission as it out-shot Drexel 17-2 over the opening 35 minutes of play and posted a 10-0 edge in penalty corners.
The comfortable margin allowed NU to play a total of 22 individuals in the contest. Northwestern would get one final score at the 48:38 mark when Flens made a terrific individual effort inside the circle to get lose and record her second goal of day and team-leading fifth of the season.
It looked like the Wildcats would be able to withstand Drexel's late push for a goal, but the Dragons eventually spoiled the shutout with just 84 seconds remaining as Idrienne Walker scored on a rebound off a penalty corner.
Northwestern is back in action at noon Saturday as it hosts Central Michigan at Lakeside Field. Fans are encouraged to stop by prior to the football game vs. Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m. as the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a Northwestern koozie.
