EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern (4-2) heads to Bowling Green, Ky. this weekend for the Holiday Inn University Plaza Invitational at Western Kentucky. Matches versus Furman, Missouri State and the host Hilltoppers will mark the final non-conference road and neutral competition in the 2015 regular season.
For the second straight week, Northwestern will face two opponents it has never seen before. Bookending the trip are Furman on Friday at 3 p.m. and Missouri State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Wildcats take on tournament host Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. Friday night.
Western Kentucky will be the first team Northwestern has played this season with AVCA national recognition. The Hilltoppers received 102 votes in the Sept. 7 poll and lead all teams in the receiving votes category.
Five of Northwestern's six matches this year have gone only three sets. The Wildcats are 3-2 in such matches with sweeps over Wake Forest, New Hampshire and Loyola-Chicago. The only match to go longer than three games was a four-set Northwestern win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Caroline Niedospial continues to climb up the all-time dig rankings at Northwestern. The senior moved up two spots last weekend to sixth and with 1,386 digs is only 44 more away from Janine Makar (1985-88) for third place in program history.
Northwestern has played good defense thus far in 2015, ranking near the top of the Big Ten in several key categories. Chicago's Big Ten Team ranks fourth in the conference in opponent kills per set (10.58), assists per set (10.05) and digs per set (12.47).
The Wildcats make their long-awaited 2015 home debut next weekend when they welcome Lipscomb and Milwaukee to Welsh-Ryan Arena for the Wildcat Challenge Sept. 18-20.
