EVANSTON, Ill. — Wildcats freshmen Joe Gaziano and Jelani Roberts have been named two of 40 finalists for the 2015 National Football Foundation National High School Scholar-Athlete Awards, which honor one student-athlete from each of the country's five regions as the best and brightest for their accomplishments as scholars, citizens and athletes at the high school level.
Each of the 40 finalists graduated from high school in 2015 and are now playing football at the collegiate level. The five honorees will be announced the week of October 5.
Gaziano is one of eight nominees from the Northeast Region and was nominated by the NFF Jack Grinold/Eastern Mass Chapter. He attended Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts where he was named the 2014 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year, a two-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic honoree and an honor roll student.
Roberts attended The Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland and was nominated by the NFF Greater Baltimore Chapter. In addition to helping guide The Gilman School to a share of last year's MIAA championship with an 8-3 record, Roberts was a National Commended Student, a National Achievement Scholarship finalist, an AP Scholar with Honor and a two-time MIAA track & field champion in the 100- and 200-meter events.
With 120 chapters and more than 12,000 members, the NFF Chapter Network impacts more than 500,000 student-athletes at 5,000 high schools in 47 states each year. The centerpiece of their efforts are the annual chapter award banquets, which recognizes more than 3,500 of the nation's top scholar-athletes and distribute more than $1 million in scholarships. From this pool of 3,5000 scholar-athletes the chapters have nominated the 40 individuals in the 2015 as finalists for the highly sought-after NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Awards. A national committee will select five honorees, one from each region.
The five honorees will travel to New York City to be honored during the NFF Chapter Awards Luncheon, presented by Under Armour on Tuesday, December 8. First bestowed in 1991, the NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Awards have become one of the most prestigious high school honors in the country. Criteria for the ward include but are not limited to academic achievement, athletic accolades and community involvement.
