Forward eligible immediately to join Northwestern front line

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Joey van Zegeren has signed with Northwestern to join the men's basketball program for the upcoming 2015-16 season while pursing his postgraduate degree. He has one year of athletic eligibility remaining and is able to compete immediately.

A native of Hoogeveen, The Netherlands, the 6-foot-10 forward comes to Evanston from Virginia Tech where he appeared in 79 career games over the last four seasons. In 2014-15, he saw action in each of the team's first 13 games -- making three starts -- while averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. He recorded a pair of double-doubles a year ago and shot 60.0 percent from the field (57-95).

As a redshirt sophomore in 2013-14, van Zegeren played in all 31 of the Hokies' games -- including 24 in a starting role -- posting averages of 6.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and a team-leading 1.7 blocked shots per contest. He also was named to the All-ACC Academic team that year.

"We're really excited to add someone of Joey's caliber to our program," Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said. "He brings four years of ACC experience and he's a veteran guy on the front line who has been very accomplished at a high level. He'll bring great athleticism, physicality and size, but most importantly experience to our team as we head into next season."
