Pair of Wildcats Earn Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships

John Coukos and Julia Kuhn awarded $7,500 apiece toward graduate degrees
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Two Northwestern Wildcats, wrestler John Coukos and softball player Julia Kuhn, have been awarded Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships, the conference announced Thursday.
A total of 29 student-athletes from 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their educations were awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievement.
Coukos is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar who has taken on four majors during his tenure in Evanston. The Framingham, Massachusetts, native is enrolled in the Integrated Science Program, while also majoring in chemistry, mathematics and biological sciences.
The fifth-year senior will stay in the area to attend the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. There, he will enter the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) to pursue a MD/PhD with an eye on studying neurodegenerative disorders such as ALS and Parkinson's.
Kuhn, already a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, will graduate in June with a degree in human communication sciences, a minor in French and a certificate in Integrated Marketing Communications. The Middletown, New Jersey, native plans to enroll at New York University, where she will pursue a Master of Science in speech language pathology.
Early this month, Kuhn was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District V Team. The senior and her teammates begin 2015 NCAA Tournament play in South Bend, Indiana on Friday, May 15 against the Kentucky Wildcats.
In order to be eligible, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
