Ibraheim Campbell is the first Northwestern player to be chosen in the NFL Draft since 2012.
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern safety Ibraheim Campbell was chosen by the Cleveland Browns Saturday in the fourth round with the 115th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Campbell becomes the highest-selected Wildcat since Corey Wootton was chosen 109th overall in 2010.
Campbell, a 2014 team captain, made 45 career starts in the secondary during his tenure in Evanston. He finished his collegiate playing days with 316 tackles, while ranking tied for third in Northwestern history with 11 interceptions and tied for fifth with 24 career pass breakups.
The Philadelphia native earned All-Big Ten Second Team recognition from the league's coaches in 2014 and an honorable mention nod from the media. He earned Big Ten Player of the Week laurels after an especially memorable performance at Purdue on Nov. 22. Campbell made eight tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, picked off a pass and broke up another against the Boilermakers.
"It's amazing and it's great to hear his name finally called," said Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald about Campbell from the NFL's Draft Town in Chicago. "It's going to be a great opportunity for him.
"[Ibraheim is] an incredibly bright football player with a high football IQ. He's a very physical player with great ball skills who can do a lot," said Fitzgerald.
"I thought what [Campbell] did at the Senior Bowl, covering in man and showing a little bit more range as a safety is the reason he went in the fourth round," said NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock during the network's coverage.
The three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree becomes the sixth Northwestern student-athlete to be drafted since 2010 under the direction of head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Campbell is the first member of the Wildcats to hear his name called since former teammates Drake Dunsmore and Jeremy Ebert went to Tampa Bay and Atlanta, respectively, in 2012.
The NFL Draft continues Saturday in Chicago.
