EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan announced the addition of outside hitter Sofia Lavin to the Wildcats for the 2015 season Monday. Lavin comes to Evanston after spending her first two collegiate seasons at the University of San Diego.
"We're thrilled to welcome Sofia into the Northwestern volleyball family," said Chan. "She has already gained a great deal of experience during her first two collegiate seasons with a highly-competitive program and we know she will come into our gym and contribute to the Wildcats from the very beginning."
Lavin, a native of Aliso Viejo, Calif., appeared in 23 matches as a sophomore in 2014. She registered 80 kills, while adding 31 digs and seven blocks for the Toreros. She notched a career-high 19 kills against Portland on Nov. 22 last year and a personal-best nine digs against South Florida on Aug. 30.
As a freshman in 2013, Lavin played in 22 matches while helping to lead USD to a No. 2 national ranking, a West Coast Conference title and an appearance in the round of 16 during the NCAA Tournament.
Lavin prepped at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, where she buried 387 kills as a senior as she earned All-Trinity League and All-Orange County Second Team accolades.
Lavin, the daughter of Rodolfo Martinez and Esther Lavin, is a first-generation American. She holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Spain.
The Californian joins three other newcomers - Ashley Bush (Union, Ky./Ryle), Rachael Fara (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Cassidy Nussman (Pearland, Texas/Pearland) - who signed National Letters of Intent in November.
