EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern used a five-run first inning and three home runs from junior Zach Jones, classmate Jack Mitchell and sophomore Joe Hoscheit to defeat Milwaukee, 9-5, in its first game at the newly renovated Rocky Miller Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim, classmate Scott Heelan and Jones combined for nine of the Wildcats' 15 total hits with three apiece. Junior Antonio Freschet and Hoscheit added two hits each in NU's victory.
The Panthers struck early and tallied the first run of the game in the opening inning. Northwestern was quick to respond and jumped on Milwaukee starter Alex McIntosh, plating five of its nine runs in the bottom of the frame. Ruchim led off the inning with a base hit to set up Jones' two-run bomb. Heelan followed up with a stand-up double to right center and crossed on an RBI single from Hoscheit, but the Wildcats were not done. With just one out and senior Reid Hunter on first, Mitchell launched a home run to left field to add two more runs for Chicago's Big Ten Team. After one inning, NU led 5-1.
Milwaukee's Nick Unes homered to left field to kick off the second inning, and by the fifth frame the Panthers evened the score, 5-5. The threat did not last long as the `Cats took back control in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases for Mitchell. The junior used a sacrifice fly to center field to drive home Jones and reclaim the lead, 6-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, Heelan led off the frame with his second double-bagger of the game, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Milwaukee error. Hoscheit backed up Heelan with his third home run this spring to push the Wildcats ahead, 8-5.
Northwestern tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth inning when Ruchim scored on a base hit from Jones after doubling down the left field line. Jones, who led the Wildcats' offense with two runs, three hits and just as many RBI, came up a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Wildcats return to Rocky Miller Park tomorrow when they host UIC for their midweek finale. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on BTN Plus.
