EVANSTON, Ill. - The Wildcats trailed by two runs in the seventh inning, but sophomore Matt Hopfner sparked an eighth-inning rally with a two-run single as Northwestern completed a season sweep of UIC, 6-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.

Sophomore Joe Hoscheit entered the game in relief in the eighth frame, earning his second win of the year and junior Matt Portland, who worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth, earned his first save this spring. Sophomore Pete Hofman and junior Jake Stolley also saw time on the mound as the quartet pitched six scoreless innings for NU.

Much like Tuesday's home opener, the visiting team opened scoring as UIC led off with a stand-up double down the left field line. The Flames followed up with consecutive base hits to plate the first run of the game.

The lead did not stand as Northwestern countered in the bottom of the frame. Junior Antonio Freschet reached based on a fielder's choice and classmate Zach Jones tallied his 15th double-bagger of the year to set up cleanup hitter Hoscheit. The sophomore launched a double to left center to cross both runners and take control of the game, 2-1.

The Flames used a Northwestern throwing error in the second inning to knot the score (2-2) and eventually took the lead with a two-run frame in the third. The Wildcats came within one run, thanks to an RBI double from freshman Jack Claeys in the fourth, but were held scoreless over the next three innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, Freschet drew a lead off walk and Jones singled to second base before Hoscheit used a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Hopfner followed up with a single up the middle to score Freschet and Jones as Northwestern regained the lead, 5-4. Claeys drove in an insurance run with a single to center field and the `Cats claimed their third-consecutive win with a 6-4 victory over UIC.

Next up, the Wildcats continue Big Ten play with a three-game set against Ohio State, beginning Friday, April 24, at Rocky Miller Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., and will be broadcast live on BTN Plus.
