No. 15 Minnesota Sweeps Northwestern, 11-0 (5)

MINNEAPOLIS -- After using big rallies to defeat Northwestern in the first two games of their Big Ten series, No. 15 Minnesota got another Sunday with a nine-run third en route to an 11-0 (5) victory over the Wildcats.
Northwestern (20-14, 8-3 Big Ten) is next in action at 5 p.m. CT/6 p.m. ET Wednesday, April 15, in a nonconference game at Notre Dame. Minnesota (33-7, 9-3 Big Ten) moves a half game up on NU in the B1G standings with the sweep of this series.
Northwestern was unable to notch a base hit in the game, getting base runners on an Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) walk in the third and a Sammy Nettling (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) walk in the fourth.
Minnesota opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-out, two-run double that kicked up the chalk on the foul line when it landed in shallow left field. In the bottom of the second, the Gophers put a runner at third with two outs, but this time NU starter Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) overpowered the batter at the plate for an inning-ending strikeout.
A series of unfortunate events in the bottom of the third including a Wildcats' error, a trip on the infield, two tough fly balls tipped off the glove in the outfield and a hit by pitch off the knob of the bat on a check swing preceded an RBI single, a grand slam and a two-run home run as part of a nine-run Minnesota inning that gave the Gophers an 11-0 lead.
Senior Olivia Duehr (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) entered the circle in relief for the second time in her career in the bottom of the fourth. The leadoff batter hit a double before Edwards gloved a wicked line drive at third and fired to Brianna LeBeau (Worth, Ill./H.L. Richards) at second to double up the runner. Though two more runners would reach, Duehr ended the inning with a ground ball to Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) at short for a scoreless frame for the senior.
Wood took the loss for NU, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks with a strikeout in 3.0 innings. Duehr worked the scoreless fourth, giving up a walk and two hits.
