EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 19 Northwestern had little problem with No. 50 Penn State Sunday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center as the Wildcats rolled to a 7-0 victory.
Northwestern (13-7, 3-2 Big Ten) surged in front by taking the doubles point. NU got a strong performance from the 69th-ranked duo of Sam Shropshire and Alex Pasareanu at the No. 1 spot as the pair rolled to an 8-3 victory over Aws Laaribi and Leonard Stakhovsky.
The Nittany Lions pulled off an 8-3 win of their own at No. 3, leaving things to be determined by the match at No. 2. A break by the Wildcats' team of Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer midway through their match with Alex Fennell and Christian Lutschaunig proved to be the difference as NU earned an 8-4 victory.
Kirchheimer, ranked No. 124, was dominant in singles play as he didn't waste any time in rolling past Leonard Stakhovsky 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot to increase the Northwestern lead to 2-0.
The advantage grew to 3-0 when Logan Staggs finished off his 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Tomas Hanzlik. Moments later, Alp Horoz clinched the match win for NU by taking down Marc Collado Castells 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
After a convincing first set, 92nd-ranked Shropshire rallied back in the second to earn a straight-sets win over Alex Fennell at the top spot, winning 6-3, 7-5. Baev fought off a slow start to rally back and defeat Aws Laaribi at No. 5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Konrad Zieba completed the sweep for the Wildcats by finishing off Matt Barry for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot.
Northwestern is back in action at Combe Tennis Center Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. as it hosts IUPUI.
