Northwestern Drops 4-1 Decision at Rice

HOUSTON, Texas -- On the road in Texas, Logan Staggs achieved his fourth straight singles win, but No. 19 Northwestern ultimately fell 4-1 to Rice. The `Cats are now 12-6 on the season.

The Owls claimed the opening point with doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Strong Kirchheimer and Fedor Baev won 6-2 at No. 2.

In singles play, David Warren beat Fedor Baev 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 to extend the Owls' lead to 2-0. Logan Staggs then defeated Gustavo Gustafsson 6-4, 6-4 on court 4, capturing his tenth dual match victory and putting NU on the board.

However, Srikar Alla completed a three-set upset over 92nd-ranked Sam Shropshire 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1. Max Andrews then locked Rice's win in beating 124th-ranked Kirchheimer 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2.

The week's play continues at home as the `Cats host No. 11 Ohio State at 5 p.m. on Friday. On Sunday, they take on No. 50 Penn State at noon before wrapping with IUPUI at 6:30 p.m.
